Head of Discovery Learning

Brookie Gibson holds a Bachelor of Architecture with First Class Honors from Victoria University in Wellington and has over eight years’ experience teaching architecture and design at university level. She taught in New Zealand, Australia and Japan before moving to China 6 years ago. She has since transitioned into primary education, earning an IB Teaching and Learning Certificate, and is committed to inquiry-based learning. She is currently the Head of Discovery Learning at Hiba Academy Shanghai where she works with her team to continuously develop an inquiry driven curriculum which has a focus on developing oracy and metacognitive skills. Brookie brings a strong passion and skill for developing students’ creative and critical thinking, shaped by her university teaching experience. She also champions the development of metacognition among both colleagues and children—an essential capability that helps learners plan, monitor, and evaluate their own learning and problem-solving. She knows that strengthening metacognitive skills supports academic performance, builds self-regulation and motivation, and increases adaptability by helping individuals recognize tresponsible, successful future. By nurturing students’ natural curiosity and creative thinking, and partnering with heir strengths and areas for growth to learn more efficiently. She believes every child deserves a meaningful education that builds skills, values, and understanding for a families and the wider school community, she aims to extend learning beyond the classroom and support lifelong learning.
