Mel Hargreaves
Business Manager
I completed my first Sapere course in 2005 with Roger. I have built a broad and strategic career across secondary, post‑16, adult, and primary education. Twenty years ago, I started as a secondary English teacher before moving into Sixth Form and Functional Skills provision, and later progressed into leadership roles managing Apprenticeships and Adult Education provision for a local college. Alongside this, I have worked in primary settings as a Teaching Assistant and have led training for schools and parents in SEND.
I now work as a freelance trainer working with mainly adults; designing and leading management development days, teaching the Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, and the teaching the Level 2 Swim Teacher course for the Institute of Swimming. These roles require strong business management skills, including programme planning, stakeholder engagement, quality assurance, and effective use of resources to ensure both educational impact and commercial viability.
I love the Thinking Moves and have used them in my teaching with all ages. I love how Primary children can grasp the concept so quickly. I love how the Thinking Moves can be used in learning objectives. I love how everyone can self-advocate for their learning preferences using the Thinking Moves. I love how the Thinking Moves promote thought processes over knowledge recall.
I believe Thinking Moves can be successfully promoted across all schools as a practical tool for learning, wellbeing, and self‑regulation. I look forward to engaging with the TM Trainers, schools, and the wider education community to promote the benefits and opportunities Thinking Moves can offer.
